ABOUT MENTORING

Coach Mentoring Program

Here are answers to some common questions on Mentoring versus Coaching

  • What is mentoring?

    • Mentoring is about development. A mentor develops a trusting relationship with the person they are mentoring and provides advice, teaching, information, and resources.
    • Mentoring conversations may include questions, but are more focused on the answers.
    • The mentor has more knowledge and experience on the subject than the person being mentored.
  • How does mentoring differ from coaching?

    • In mentoring, the mentor is considered the expert, or the person with more knowledge and experience.
    • In coaching, the client is considered the expert in the process.
  • So, what is coach mentoring?

    • Coach mentoring combines the teaching element of mentoring with coaching conversations.
    • In coach mentoring, both the client and the coach bring their expertise to the conversations.
  • Who works best with this approach?

Coach mentoring works best for people who are launching into new territory and feel they need more guidance than the coaching model provides. They are looking to draw upon the expertise of the mentor in order to move further, faster, but are not expecting to be told exactly what to do.

  • Who’s not a good fit for this model?

    • If you are looking for someone to give you a step by step plan on what to do, then you may find yourself frustrated because the final decisions on how you execute your plan, still come from you.
    • If you are looking for someone to actually do the work for you, then you may want to consider a “done for you” solution.
  • What can I expect from the coach mentoring session?

    • When you work with me, you will find yourself in a safe, supportive, calm environment that encourages you to get to the heart of what really matters to you. You will feel valued, supported, and heard.
    • We will have an engaging conversation that will bring forth clarity, insights, and revelations that may surprise and delight you. You will find yourself challenged to think in new ways that reveal the answers you are looking for.
    • Periodically, you may receive more guidance and advice than you would receive in a coaching only session.
    • You may also be assigned homework, which will expand your knowledge in the area you are being mentored in.
    • By the time our session ends, you will have clear, actionable goals that are self-motivating, life affirming, and most importantly, forward moving.
  • What results can I expect from coach mentoring?

    • Obviously, results will vary from person to person, depending on your actual goals, your commitment to the process and your willingness to be coached and mentored. That said, you will begin to get really clear on what is most important for you to work on right now. From this place, we can create a plan to meet your goals.
    • Our partnership will provide you with the confidence needed to take action as we move together towards your goals. And if you get stuck along the way, I’ll help you break through the obstacles and challenges holding you back.
    • You will be provided with information for the specific area of mentoring you are engaged in, in order to move you forward faster and help expand your thinking. Different teaching methods may be used such as: discussion, worksheets, research assignments, training videos, and others.
    • Most importantly, I will help you embed success habits as we celebrate your successes during each step of this journey. You are not doing this alone. I will hold you accountable, be your cheerleader, provide mentorship when necessary, and help bring out the best in you!
